Pas Seul

My Approach

Pas Seul, started in 2020, was almost set to be a continuation from its preceding project, Grandiose, but with a focus on foliage on the macro-level. I had a desire to work on a longitudinal study with a goal of this project lasting upwards of 5 years. The mission of Pas Seul was to shine light on the beauty of these macro floral-scapes, find beautiful detail in the minimal and minute, and give life to what I felt like was often overlooked — much of the flowers and flora photographed are smaller parts of a larger whole, and that’s what I wanted to capture.

All work is photographed on 4x5 Large Format Film, and the vast majority on black and white film. From that, most of the imagery seen is photographed on Ilford Ortho 80 Plus, CatLabs XFilm 80ii, and a few trials on expired (2012) Kodak Portra 400.

Another notable aspect of my film work is I rarely, if at all, clean the dust or negatives off once scanned. I do my best to keep my process clean from development to scanning, but I’ve always welcomed the dust, scratches, or finger prints that found their way to my work;

for me it gives character and a sense of beautiful imperfection and acts as a reminder to the human interaction and involvement in the entire process of making an image on film.
